Expanded sweetener molecule development programme aims to broaden access to plant based sweetening solutions tailored to diverse customer food and beverage categories.

Tate & Lyle PLC, a global leader in ingredient solutions for healthier food and beverages, today announced the expansion of its collaboration with BioHarvest Sciences Inc., broadening the scope of their joint sweetener development programme to include multiple plant‑based sweetener molecules.

The expanded collaboration builds on the initial agreement signed in 2024 and reflects strong technical progress to date, as well as Tate & Lyle’s ambition to equip food and beverage manufacturers with a flexible toolkit of sweetening solutions that can be tailored to different formulation needs.

As customer requirements around taste, cost and labelling continue to evolve, no single sweetener can address all food and beverage category needs. Tate & Lyle’s approach focuses on developing complementary sweetening options that can be used independently or together – enabling product‑specific optimisation while supporting sugar and calorie reduction goals.

The collaboration draws on BioHarvest’s Botanical Synthesis™ platform, which supports the development of plant‑based, non‑GMO ingredients, reducing the industry’s reliance on traditional agricultural extraction for rare or hard‑to‑source botanicals. This approach aligns with Tate & Lyle’s focus on delivering ingredient innovation that balances performance, scalability and responsible sourcing considerations.

The partnership builds on Tate & Lyle’s long‑standing commitment to sugar and calorie reduction and its track record in sweetener innovation. The company’s heritage includes major industry milestones, from the discovery of sucralose in 1976, to the commercialisation at scale of allulose in 2015 and high‑purity bioconverted stevia Reb M in 2018.

Today, Tate & Lyle’s development pipeline is focused on advancing sweetening solutions that deliver great taste while supporting sugar and calorie reduction, helping customers meet evolving consumer expectations around health and wellbeing. This includes sweet ingredients that reduce sugar and calories and have the potential to support broader health and wellbeing needs.

A 2025 proprietary Tate & Lyle survey across seven global markets found that over half of respondents planned to reduce their sugar consumption in the following 12 months, with strong consumer interest in great‑tasting sweeteners derived from fruits and plants1. The intent to reduce sugar was greater than the intent to reduce calorie and fat consumption, showing how top of mind sugar reduction is for consumers.

Tate & Lyle’s innovation approach is informed by more than a decade of global research into consumer perceptions of ingredients. This ensures that considerations such as sensory performance, value creation and label acceptance are embedded into ingredient development from the outset.

Distribution agreement extended to include citrus pulp co-products made from pectin production in Tate & Lyle’s facility in Großenbrode, Germany

Tate & Lyle PLC, a global leader in ingredient solutions for healthier food and beverages, has extended its partnership with Van Triest CirQlar, part of ForFarmers, a leading animal feed business, to enhance the value creation and environmental impact of its co-products business. The partnership will also help Tate & Lyle to meet its commitment to beneficially use 100 % of its waste by 2030.

Under the extended agreement, Van Triest CirQlar, which specialises in the purchasing and sales of co-products, will manage the main aspects of citrus pulp co-product sales and distribution from Tate & Lyle’s pectin production facility in Großenbrode, Germany. Tate & Lyle’s pectin is a nature-based ingredient derived from citrus fruit peels, a co-product of the juice industry. Nutritious material left over from the production of pectin becomes a citrus pulp co-product, which is widely used as animal feed, and which Tate & Lyle currently supplies to livestock farmers in northern Germany.

Tate & Lyle’s Großenbrode facility, acquired in 2024, has supplied farmers in northern Germany with citrus pulp co-products for animal feed for over forty years, ensuring the beneficial use of a significant residual stream while generating additional value. Following the acquisition, strong cross-site cooperation quickly revealed synergies between Großenbrode and Tate & Lyle’s Koog aan de Zaan facility in the Netherlands, which has an existing distribution agreement in place with Van Triest CirQlar for several of its corn-based co-products. By aligning co-products operations and leveraging Van Triest CirQlar’s specialised market expertise and customer network, Tate & Lyle is further strengthening the commercial and operational performance of its co-products business.

This agreement ensures long-term market access and structured pricing for Großenbrode’s main capacity of citrus pulp co-product, reducing commercial risk and increasing planning reliability. By leveraging Van Triest CirQlar’s specialised market expertise, customer network and active market management, Tate & Lyle can optimise value realisation for its co-products while ensuring consistent offtake. This model strengthens circular value chains and allows Tate & Lyle to focus on its core food and drink ingredient customer offering.

Sönke Schweiger, Tate & Lyle Plant Director in Großenbrode, explained: “At our Großenbrode facility, we turn upcycled citrus peels into high value ingredients and give their co-products a second life – that’s circularity in action. With this expanded partnership, we can maximise the commercial and environmental value of our pectin production. By harmonising our co-products models across two sites drawing on external expertise, we can focus on delivering high quality, functional food and drink ingredients that support healthier diets while caring for our planet and making good use of its resources.”

Roel van Haeren, Managing Director Van Triest CirQlar Europe, explained: “This partnership aligns with our objective to lead in managed co product value chains and is an important step in further strengthening our relationship with Tate & Lyle. It is a strategic expansion of our activities in Germany and our citrus pulp position in this market. It’s exactly how Van Triest CirQlar grows – by professionalising co product streams and turning them into dependable, circular value.”

Study found that a combination of a probiotic and prebiotic—referred to as a “synbiotic”—can significantly reduce heart muscle damage caused by diet-induced cardiac disease

In a new peer reviewed study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Basic to Translational Science, Irish researchers have discovered novel links between gut microbes, inflammation and heart disease. Additionally, the study demonstrated that giving a single probiotic combined with a soluble dietary fibre protects against heart disease. The study used Tate & Lyle’s PROMITOR® Soluble Corn Fibre as the prebiotic component.

The study shows the profound impact of the gut-heart connection on cardiac health. For the first time, a human scale model revealed the full extent of the “gut-heart axis,” showing how gut microbe imbalance and inflammation originating in the gut can contribute to heart damage. Excitingly, the study found that a combination of a probiotic and prebiotic – referred to as a “synbiotic” – can significantly reduce heart muscle damage caused by diet-induced cardiac disease.

This research, led by scientists from APC Microbiome Ireland (APC), a world-leading Research Ireland centre based at University College Cork (UCC), and Teagasc (the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority), was conducted in collaboration with Tate & Lyle, a world leader in ingredient solutions for healthier and tastier food and beverages. The findings demonstrate the potential of reducing the risk of heart disease – especially in people with poor diets and obesity, half of whom experience cardiovascular issues – by manipulating the gut microbiome with synbiotics.

“This is the first time that a bacteria residing only in the gut has successfully been used to treat heart disease associated with obesity and high blood pressure, and our synbiotic treatment equals some of the best available cardiac drugs in a human scale model. This work opens new avenues for potentially groundbreaking disease-modifying therapy in patients with obesity, high blood pressure and diet-related heart disease,” said Prof. Noel Caplice, an APC Principal Investigator, Chair of Cardiovascular Sciences at UCC, and Consultant Cardiologist at Cork University Hospital.

Prof. Catherine Stanton, Senior Principal Research Officer at Teagasc Moorepark Food Research Centre and an APC Principal Investigator, emphasised the innovative potential of this work: “This study highlights the critical role the gut microbiome plays in our health and physiology. Our results are a testament to the power of harnessing gut microbes to protect against some chronic diseases like heart failure. It’s an exciting step forward in personalised nutrition.”

Dr Kavita Karnik, Global Head of Nutrition, Regulatory and Scientific Affairs at Tate & Lyle praised the innovative work, commenting: “At Tate & Lyle, we are proud to support and partner in cutting-edge research that explores how our dietary fibres, when combined with probiotic strains, can be used to improve health outcomes. It is exciting to see the integral role played by PROMITOR® Soluble Corn Fibre in this unique symbiotic combination. This work creates new opportunities to leverage our science and ingredients to have a positive impact on significant public health challenges such as obesity and associated cardiometabolic outcomes.”

Huber Corporation for a total implied consideration of US$1.8 billion (approximately £1.4 billion)1, on a cash-free, debt-free basis (the ‘Proposed Transaction’).

Over the last six years, Tate & Lyle has been executing a major strategic transformation to become a growth-focused speciality food and beverage solutions business aligned to attractive structural and growing consumer trends for healthier, tastier and more sustainable food and drink. This transformation has included a much sharper focus on customers and key categories, increased investment in innovation and solution selling capabilities, and the significant strengthening of its Sweetening, Mouthfeel and Fortification platforms through new product development and acquisitions. This transformation was completed with the announcement on 23 May 2024 of the proposed sale of Tate & Lyle’s remaining interest in Primary Products Investments LLC (‘Primient’).

The Proposed Transaction significantly accelerates Tate & Lyle’s strategy to be a leading and differentiated speciality food and beverage solutions business, and to become the solutions partner of choice for customers. It is expected to drive stronger revenue growth and significant adjusted EBITDA margin improvement over the next few years. It is also expected to be accretive to adjusted earnings per share, including cost synergies only, in the second full financial year following completion, and strongly accretive thereafter.

Tate & Lyle and Cryptobiotix’s breakthrough ex-vivo* study shows that sucralose does not impact the gut microbiota, while other low and no calorie sweeteners have potentially beneficial health effects

A new, first-of-its-kind study has identified unique and potentially beneficial interactions between certain low and no calorie sweeteners, including stevia, and the human gut microbiota. Tate & Lyle PLC, a world leader in ingredient solutions for healthier food and drink, partnered with Cryptobiotix, pioneers in preclinical gastrointestinal research, on the study.

Dr. Davide Risso, molecular biology specialist and Tate & Lyle’s Head of Nutrition Research, led the project to explore the potential impact of certain low and no calorie sweeteners on the gut environment in both healthy individuals and those with type 2 diabetes. The research involved taking samples from co-living adults consuming a similar diet – to lower the potential variation introduced by differences in long-term diet, a major driver of microbiota composition. The doses of low and no calorie sweeteners used were based on actual intakes, regulations and amounts that are generally included in foods and beverages during different timepoints.

Results from the pre-clinical study, published in the leading peer reviewed, open-access journal the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, found that some of the studied low calorie and no calorie sweeteners had no impact on the gut microbiota, while others had potential beneficial health effects.

Using Cryptobiotix’s cutting-edge SIFR® (“cipher”) technology to recreate the gut environment outside of the human body, the research partners found that sweeteners, such as sucralose, do not impact the microbial composition of the gut. Furthermore, other sweeteners, including stevia, have a beneficial impact on the gut microbiota as they were found to be easily fermented and increase the density of certain health-supporting bacteria, with the production of short-chain fatty acids.

The study adds to the strong scientific evidence demonstrating the beneficial role low and no calorie sweeteners can play when used as a part of a balanced diet. Assessments of additional low and no calorie sweeteners, including allulose and erythritol, are being completed and details will be shared in due course.

Dr. Davide Risso, Tate & Lyle’s Head of Nutrition Research, said:
“In this study, the low and no calorie sweeteners we have assessed are shown to have either no impact on the gut microbiota or to offer potential health benefits beyond their established sugar and calorie reduction benefits. Human clinical trials will be required to confirm the potential health benefits. At Tate & Lyle, we’re committed to advancing understanding around the role of low and no calorie sweeteners in the diet and sharing knowledge in this emerging field as a purpose-led, science-driven company.”

Dr Pieter Van den Abbeele, Cryptobiotix’s Chief Scientific Officer, said:
“Cryptobiotix was founded with the ambition of providing accurate insights into the impact and behaviour of ingredients in relation to the gut microbiome. This study provides much-needed evidence to consider the potential benefits of sweeteners individually, rather than as a uniform whole. The robustness and validation work that went into the SIFR® technology used, allowed us to pinpoint specific health-promoting pathways in relation to specific low and no calorie sweeteners.”

Tate & Lyle PLC announced a new addition to its sweetener portfolio – ERYTESSE Erythritol. Through a strategic partnership distribution agreement with a leading supplier of erythritol, this addition expands the companies ability to help customers deliver on consumer demand for healthier, sugar and calorie reduced products, and extends Tate & Lyle’s position as one of the world leaders in ingredient solutions for healthier food and beverages.

ERYTESSE Erythritol has 70 % the sweetness of sucrose and a similar temporal profile, with zero1 calories2. It can be used in a range of categories, including beverages, dairy, bakery and confectionery. Erythritol fits well into our existing portfolio and can be used alone or in combination with natural sweeteners, like stevia and monk fruit, and high potency sweeteners like sucralose. It offers a full sugar-like taste experience and helps customers formulate sugar reduced foods and beverages at an acceptable cost in use. It can also be used to create sweetening solutions for manufactured food products, including bulking and mouthfeel when sucrose is reduced or removed. In addition, it offers good stability in high levels of heat or acidity during processing, making it suitable for a host of formulations.

The strengthening of this partnership will allow Tate & Lyle’s customers in Greece, Bulgaria and North Macedonia to benefit from Azelis’ extensive capabilities in solution selling, application and technical services, as well as their market knowledge and supply chain excellence.

Tate & Lyle PLC, a leading global provider of food and beverage solutions and ingredients, is pleased to unveil six key trends that are shaping consumer product innovation in the food and beverage market both today and tomorrow.

Consumers today expect more from their favourite brands, not only offering them products that are healthier and tastier, but which have been produced in a responsible and sustainable way.

Beth Nieman Hacker, Market Research Director at Tate & Lyle, said: “By understanding how values, behaviours and appetites are changing, and the drivers behind these shifts, food and beverage brands can launch products that meet the needs of consumers today and better anticipate how these will evolve.”

Tate & Lyle’s global market research team has conducted its own proprietary consumer research, studied hundreds of research papers and data points and, together with Tate & Lyle’s commercial teams worldwide, has identified the following key trends driving consumer purchases:

  • Transparency: increasing numbers of consumers are seeking healthy food and beverage products they can trust and want to know the source of the ingredients in those products. The clean label movement continues to evolve, moving from all-natural claims to communicating how products are made1.
  • Plant-Based: consumers are focused on health and sustainability, opting for products that are better for them and better for the planet. They are drawn to products that are plant-based because positive health outcomes and environmental impacts are associated with plant-based eating2.
  • Sugar reduction: consumers are looking for ways to get healthy and stay healthy. One recommendation to achieve better health is to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet. However, consumers are torn between reducing sugar and maintaining a great taste experience3.
  • Gut Health: globally, consumers are not getting enough fibre daily. Fibre helps support gut health and consumers are interested in getting more of it in their diet. As awareness of gut health and the benefits a healthy gut can provide continues to grow, more consumers will look for products with gut health benefits4.
  • Convenience: consumers are digitally connected and time poor, seeking ease, efficiency, and instant gratification from the products they buy, including food and beverages. Whilst convenient products meet the needs of global consumers amidst their busier, more stressful lives, this presents formulation challenges for manufacturers5.
  • Better-for-you snacking: snacking is an important meal occasion; however, consumers are prioritising their health. “Better-for-you” snacking products are an obvious choice to meet consumers’ health needs6.

Natalya Bright, Market Research Manager, at Tate and Lyle, said: “These global trends play to Tate & Lyle’s strengths as an ingredient provider, with our wide range of responsibly-sourced, almost exclusively plant-based solutions that are label-friendly and support healthy living.

“Since millions of people across the world consume products containing our ingredients every day, the heart of our business is about Improving Lives for Generations, and we’re proud to partner with our customers to do just that while helping them to succeed in the marketplace.”

Tate & Lyle PLC, a leading global provider of food and beverage solutions and ingredients, announced the appointment of William Magee as President, North America, Food & Beverage Solutions, and as a member of Tate & Lyle’s Executive Committee, with effect from 1 October 2021.

William Magee joined Tate & Lyle in April 2018 as Commercial Vice President, North America, Food & Beverage Solutions, before being promoted to Senior Vice President and General Manager, North America, Food & Beverage Solutions later that year. In these positions, he has been instrumental in leading the Company’s growth transformation in the region over the last three years. Prior to joining Tate & Lyle, Bill held senior leadership roles with Rohm & Haas, H.B Fuller and Michelman.

Tate & Lyle PLC, a leading global provider of food and beverage ingredients and solutions, has launched a new sustainability programme to enable stevia growers in China to lower their environmental impact and gain greater economic benefit from production of this in-demand no calorie sweetener. Developed with environmental charity, Earthwatch Europe, and being rolled out with support from Nanjing Agricultural University (NJAU), the outreach programme provides farming families in Dongtai, East China with training to help them to modernise farming practices and achieve sustainability-related accreditation for their stevia.1

As a leading global stevia supplier, in 2019 Tate & Lyle commissioned Earthwatch to undertake a first-of-its-kind study to assess the environmental impacts of different approaches to stevia production in China, where most of the world’s stevia is grown. The study identified a significant opportunity to drive environmental improvements in stevia production and support the Company’s suppliers in Dongtai, one of the first areas in China where stevia was cultivated around 40 years ago and one of the main seedling supply areas in the country. Learnings from this study have been incorporated into the new sustainable stevia programme, with key areas identified by Earthwatch including:

  • Lowering the environmental impacts of stevia production by changing usage of synthetic fertiliser and pesticides to more sustainable alternatives, and providing guidance on application timing, targeting and volumes.
  • Taking a comprehensive prevention and control approach to protect against pests, crop diseases and weeds, replacing plastic materials used for mulching with more sustainable alternatives.
  • Developing farming practices to help maintain soil health, keep carbon locked in and improve on-farm composting.

Stevia experts from nearby NJAU are supporting growers in the programme through training, farm visits and best practice sharing. In a new pilot study, the NJAU team will also apply more sustainable fertiliser to an area of land and monitor its impact to help demonstrate and communicate the benefits of this intervention, the main recommendation for Dongtai farmers in the 2019 study. Stevia growers will also benefit from mentoring throughout the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) certification process.

1Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) is one of the main global food and drink value chain accreditation initiatives aimed at accelerating the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. This pilot programme will run until 2022.

Globally, from 2015 to 2019, product launches that contain stevia grew by compound annual growth rate of 15 %.1 In the year ended 31 March 2020, Tate & Lyle’s stevia revenues grew by 23 %, making it an important contributor to New Products revenue growth.

Tate & Lyle issues the following trading statement for the three months ended 31 December 2017.

The Group saw volume momentum in its Speciality Food Ingredients and Bulk Ingredients divisions and remains on track to deliver progress in adjusted profit before tax in constant currency for the year ending 31 March 2018, in line with guidance.

In Speciality Food Ingredients, the core business delivered good volume growth, including a continuation of modest volume growth in North America.  In Food Systems, profit improved although volume was lower.  SPLENDA® Sucralose performed as anticipated with profit in line with the comparative period.  In the division overall, decisions taken in the first half, particularly to invest behind the longer term development of the business, will moderate profit growth in the second half.

In Bulk Ingredients, sweetener volume in North America grew and profit growth is currently expected to be robust for the financial year ending 31 March 2018.  The 2018 calendar year bulk sweetener pricing round is now substantially complete with margins broadly in line with the previous year.

Tate & Lyle PLC is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Hampton as Chief Executive of Tate & Lyle with effect from 1 April 2018.  Nick is currently Chief Financial Officer and a Board member of Tate & Lyle.

Nick Hampton succeeds Javed Ahmed who, having served as Chief Executive of Tate & Lyle since October 2009, will step down from this role and from the Board, and retire from the Company, with effect from 1 April 2018.

Nick Hampton joined Tate & Lyle as Chief Financial Officer in September 2014 from PepsiCo where he had served as President West Europe and Senior Vice President Commercial Europe since 2013. Prior to that, during a 20-year career at PepsiCo, he held a number of senior finance and operational roles.

The process to appoint a new Chief Financial Officer of Tate & Lyle is underway, and a further announcement will be made in due course.

This Trading Statement covers the period from 1 April 2017 to 30 June 2017, which is the first quarter of the financial year.

The Group made an encouraging start to the year with profit in constant currency ahead of the comparative period, and volume ahead in both divisions.

In core Speciality Food Ingredients:

  • North America, where the overall Food and Beverage market remained soft, saw modest volume growth with firmer volume from some larger customers, and also continued to make progress in broadening its customer base.
  • Asia Pacific and Latin America, and Europe, Middle East and Africa delivered strong volume growth.

In the remainder of the Speciality Food Ingredients division, Food Systems volume was in line with the comparative period and SPLENDA® Sucralose performed as expected.
  • In Bulk Ingredients, the core business performed well driven by solid demand for sweeteners and industrial starches, firm US bulk sweetener margins, and continued strong manufacturing performance. In Commodities, performance was ahead of the comparative period.

Overall, we continue to expect that the Group will make underlying progress in the full year.
