Syrups are becoming more and more a growth engine in the beverage industry. Archer Daniels Midland Company’s (ADM) WILD Flavors & Specialty Ingredients business unit (WFSI) provides a wide-ranging and attractive portfolio which satisfies the many different needs of varying markets and target groups.

Syrups are on the rise on the European and African markets. According to the market-research institute Canadean, from 2009 to 2020 an increase in sales is anticipated in Europe's classic syrup-drinking countries. The figures range from a 22 percent increase in France to 36 percent in the Czech Republic. Canadean's projections for the market leader South Africa indicate figures rising from 1.8 billion liters in 2009 to a whopping 3 billion liters by 2020, an increase of 62 percent. “This positive prognosis shows the huge potential of syrup, and not only in countries where it is already well-established. We see great innovation opportunities in this product category, including growth in other EU countries,” says Melanie Wabro, product manager, syrups for WFSI. Canadean predicts growth figures of 19 percent each for Germany and Eastern Europe in the period from 2009 to 2020. Portugal is even expected to increase by 30 percent.

A wide-ranging and attractive portfolio of WFSI syrups

WFSI offers the ideal syrup concept for every market and target-group need, making it possible for manufacturers to offer the right positioning and labeling for everything from refreshing mainstream fruit-flavored syrups all the way to top-quality premium syrups with a high juice content. Naturalness and calorie are also taken into consideration. Amongst others WFSI features syrups without artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners, making them perfect for positioning in the natural sector. Calorie-conscious consumers can select options with sweeteners and/or steviol glycosides from the stevia plant. In addition, WFSI also produces functional syrups with vitamins or minerals, such as "Immune" with vitamin C and zinc or "Energy" with Vitamin B6, B12, biotin as well as caffeine and inositol. Innovative syrups such as delicious duo-fruit flavors (e.g. “Lime+Ginger” and “Raspberry+Mint”) and remarkable sour and bitter syrups round out the WFSI portfolio.
