Since 1996 Reinhold Carle is a full professor at the Institute of Food Science and Biotechnology at Hohenheim University, Stuttgart (Germany). Due to his expertise and contributions in the field of food technology, he was elected an IFT Fellow. This great honour conferred by the Institute of Food Technologists is dedicated to outstanding food scientists. Until now, only three German scientists earned this distinction, among them Rudolf Heiss, who has pioneered food technology and founded the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) in Freising.

Reinhold Carle graduated in biology, chemistry, and pharmacy. After having gained ample managerial experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Carle was appointed Director and Professor at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medicinal Devices (BfArM) in Berlin. In 1996, he was offered chair positions of Pharmaceutical Biology at the University of Jena, Germany, and Plant Foodstuff Technology at Hohenheim University, respectively. Although not being a trained food technologist, Dr. Carle decided in favor of Hohenheim, where he established a highly productive research group. Within merely 15 years of his university career, he and his coworkers have published about 250 peer-reviewed original papers and 100 reviews. Furthermore, he has trained and guided almost 40 Ph.D. students and 200 diploma candidates. Due to his outstanding expertise, he has been offered a double appointment for the chair of “Food System Technology” at the Technical University of Munich and the direction of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging in Freising. In web of science-based analyses of citations he is always the top ranked food technologist among the most cited scientists from German speaking countries (D-A-CH) in the highly competitive field of nutritional science including animal nutrition. As Dr. Carle is a world authority in plant foodstuff technology, his outstanding expertise is highly estimated in national, European and international boards.

In June, 2012, IFT Fellows have been honored at the organization’s Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.
